Are you searching for the best movies to watch before going to Disneyland?
One of my favorite ways to prepare for a Disney vacation doesn’t involve packing.
Or making dining reservations.
Or even deciding which ears I’m going to wear.
It starts on my couch.
Whenever I have a Disneyland trip coming up, I love spending the weeks beforehand rewatching Disney movies that connect to the attractions, lands, and stories I’ll soon experience in the parks.
And let me tell you…
It changes everything.
That’s why I always recommend a Disney movie marathon before your trip.
Whether it’s your first Disneyland vacation or your fiftieth, these films will help you appreciate the parks in a completely different way.
So grab your favorite snack, cozy up on the couch, and let’s count down the Disney movies I think every Disneyland visitor should watch before they go.

Why Watch Disney Movies Before Visiting Disneyland?
I think it’s easy to forget that Disneyland wasn’t built around rides, it was built around stories.
The attractions become more meaningful when you already know the characters, the music, and the emotions behind them.
Instead of simply riding an attraction, you’re stepping inside a world you already love.
That’s part of the magic.

1. Peter Pan
If you’ve never watched Peter Pan before flying over London on Peter Pan’s Flight…
You’re missing part of the experience.
This classic animated film introduces you to Peter, Wendy, Captain Hook, Tinker Bell, and Never Land.
Then, when you board the attraction, it feels like you’ve become part of the story instead of simply riding through it.
- Amazon Prime Video (Video on Demand)
Be sure to pay close attention to the nighttime scenes over London. They’re beautifully recreated inside the attraction.

2. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Yes, the attraction came before the movies, but I still recommend watching the first Pirates film before visiting Disneyland.
Not because the ride follows the movie exactly (it doesn’t), but because it helps you appreciate how Disney transformed a beloved attraction into one of its biggest film franchises.
- Blu-ray
- Box Set
- Collection
- Disney
- 1-5
And let’s be honest…
Captain Jack Sparrow makes almost everything more entertaining.

3. The Haunted Mansion
If you’re planning to experience Haunted Mansion, especially during the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay, watching both films or even revisiting The Nightmare Before Christmas adds another layer of fun.
- Movie dvd
The attraction has inspired multiple movies, and while none of them recreate the ride exactly, they all capture that playful balance of spooky and humorous that makes Haunted Mansion so beloved.
- A single mom named Gabbie hires a tour guide, a psychic, a priest, and a historian to help exorcise their newly bought mansion; after discovering it is inhabited by ghosts.

This movie has become even more important for Disney Parks fans.
The music, the heart, the setting, and the characters!
Everything about this film reminds me why Disney storytelling connects with so many people.
And if you’ve experienced Tiana’s Bayou Adventure elsewhere or simply love Princess Tiana, this movie deserves another watch before your trip.

5. Big Hero 6
Disneyland’s San Fransokyo Square comes alive in a completely different way after watching Big Hero 6.
The movie beautifully blends action, heart, friendship, and humor.
- Based on the comic book characters ‘Big Hero 6’ who first appeared in ‘Sunfire and Big Hero 6 #1’ created by Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau and published by Marvel Comics September 1998.

6. Cars
Even if you’re not a huge racing fan, Cars is practically required viewing before stepping into Cars Land.
The Imagineers recreated Radiator Springs with incredible attention to detail.
Watching Lightning McQueen, Mater, Sally, and Doc Hudson first makes every corner of Cars Land feel familiar. And Radiator Springs Racers?
Still one of the best attractions Disney has ever built.

7. Star Wars: A New Hope
Galaxy’s Edge becomes infinitely more meaningful when you understand the Star Wars universe.
If you’re new to Star Wars, I’d begin with the original 1977 film.
It introduces Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Darth Vader, and the Force in a way that still holds up beautifully today.
You don’t need to watch every Star Wars movie before visiting Disneyland, but starting here is a great foundation.

8. Toy Story
Toy Story has become one of Disney and Pixar’s defining franchises.
Watching Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the gang before visiting Disneyland adds so much context to attractions, character interactions, and Pixar-themed experiences throughout the resort.
Plus, it reminds us all that growing up doesn’t mean leaving imagination behind.

9. Sleeping Beauty
Here’s something many first-time visitors don’t realize: Sleeping Beauty Castle isn’t just Disneyland’s icon, it’s inspired by one of Disney’s most beautiful animated classics.
Before your trip, revisit Sleeping Beauty.
Then, when you’re standing in front of the castle, you’ll notice details inspired by Princess Aurora’s story throughout the park.
Sometimes slowing down and appreciating those details becomes one of the most magical parts of the day.

10. Fantasia
I don’t think Fantasia gets enough love.
It’s artistic, imaginative, and Mickey’s role as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice has become one of Disney’s defining images.

Final Thoughts: Make the Stories Part of Your Journey
One of the reasons I keep coming back to Disney parks is that they remind me stories matter.
They inspire us, comfort us, challenge us, and sometimes, they help us see the world with a little more wonder.
Watching these movies before your Disneyland vacation won’t make you skip the attraction lines or save you money.
But they will help you notice things you might have otherwise walked right past.
So before you zip up your suitcase and head to the Happiest Place on Earth, spend a little time revisiting the films that inspired it all.
You may discover that the magic begins long before you ever walk through the front gates.
